September 10, 2026Did you know the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) maintains its own armed, uniformed police force, responsible for keeping over 1,300 facilities safe for Veterans, their families, and staff?
VA is currently hiring police officers across the country to provide law enforcement and safety services at our facilities. Here’s a closer look into a VA police officer career, and how you can join our team.
VA Police Service
VA Police are federal law enforcement officers employed directly by VA. You can find them stationed at VA Medical Centers (VAMCs), Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), and other facilities nationwide, as well as Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) and National Cemetery Administration (NCA) offices.
The mission to protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, and visitors who come through VA doors translates into a wide range of duties:
- Patrol and physical security: monitoring buildings, grounds, and parking areas, and responding to calls for service.
- Law enforcement: enforcing federal, state, and local laws that apply on government property.
- Crisis response: VA police officers are trained to de-escalate situations involving patients in crisis.
- Investigations: looking into incidents on VA property, often coordinating with the VA Office of Inspector General on more serious cases.
- Community and customer service: Officers regularly interact with anxious or vulnerable patients and families, which calls for a different touch than traditional street patrol.
“It’s not your typical police department, said Corporal Lee Higginbotham. “Be prepared to provide a lot of direct customer service and do a lot of talking. We often help bridge the gap between Veterans and the staff.”
Benefits made for you
VA proudly offers a competitive benefits package, including health, dental and vision coverage, generous personal and sick leave, and federally supported retirement options. Guided by a mission that truly matters, you’ll find a VA career personally fulfilling and professionally rewarding.
