Launch your clinical laboratory scientist career with VA-STEP

Interested in a career as a clinical laboratory scientist? Students can get paid, hands-on clinical training at a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center with the VA Student Trainee Experience Program (VA-STEP).

For more than 20 years, VA has offered this exciting, year-long clinical experience for students pursuing their Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) degree.

The VA experience

VA offers aspiring clinical laboratory scientists seeking fulfilling careers an opportunity to improve the lives of those who’ve served our nation.

VA clinical laboratory scientists ensure that Veterans receive the high-quality care they need and deserve. They perform tests on blood, tissue samples, and more, evaluate the results, and suggest follow-up tests or procedures as needed. Clinical laboratory scientists solve complex challenges as integral members of Veteran-centered care teams.

“We are like the detectives behind the scenes,” says Liliana Arce, microbiology/molecular medical technologist at VA. “Nobody sees us, but we have a lot to do with the health of every patient.”

VA-STEP eligibility and benefits

VA-STEP candidates must be enrolled in an accredited MLS program, have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, and have had at least one prior clinical experience in a medical center or hospital. Additional requirements include U.S. citizenship and the ability to work full-time during the summer months and part-time during the academic year.

VA-STEP students are paid as hourly, intermittent employees. While students may express a preference for a specific work location, they are placed according to preceptor availability and facility needs and may rotate to other units for observational experiences.

How to apply

VA uses an Application Management System (AMS) for VA-STEP applications. The steps for applying are as follows:

1. Create your account in the AMS. Use one user profile and provide two email addresses for communication.
2. Prepare documents which include your:
   • Application
   • Two recommendation letters:
     • Dean/Academic Faculty
     • Employer/Manager/Other
   • Resume
   • Transcript
   • DD214 (for current or former service members)
3. Start early and complete each task on time; some items require coordination with your school or other entities.
4. Submit by the deadline. If you edit after submitting, file an addendum and ensure all items are complete before the window closes.
5. Complete the online application. Paper, scanned, or emailed applications aren’t accepted. Use a reliable internet connection and modern browser.
